Upslope Grand Reserve

600 925 Upslope Brewing

Introducing Upslope Grand Reserve: a one-of-a-kind beer, four years in the making. Its story starts in 2017, when it was initially brewed as “Batch 1000” and Volume 19 of our Lee Hill Series; a massive, high gravity beer aged in bourbon barrels for a year. Our brewers allowed a small portion of Vol. 19 to continue aging for the past few years, deepening the barrel character and allowing for slow oxidation. The result was a sweet, indulgent after-dinner libation akin to an aged tawny port or Pedro Ximénez sherry.

Upslope Grand Reserve is bottled intentionally still (without carbonation) to preserve the rich, vinous qualities of this deeply-aged liquid. For max enjoyment, we recommend letting the beer breathe in a port glass or decanter for about an hour to allow it to warm to room temperature. Savor in the notes of muscovado sugar, dried figs and vanilla from the base beer as they yield to oxidative accents of burnt honey and a nutty, candied character reminiscent of pralines. A velvety, syrupy body is complimented by a warming and decadent finish. Due to the high alcohol content and advanced oxidation of Upslope Grand Reserve, one can reseal the bottle after opening and enjoy it over and over again.

The story of Grand Reserve started with one of the first barrel-aged releases I ever worked on at Upslope, Batch 1000, back in 2017. That beer had many of the decadent, vinous qualities that I enjoy in port and sherry, and we wanted to see how far we could take that character in a beer. Batch 1000 carries heft and sweetness that enables it to take on a lot of oak character and age in the cask for a very long time,” said head brewer Alex Meyer. “We typically age a beer for no longer than a year in barrels, but the Grand Reserve was double barrel-aged for four years to encourage deep oxidative notes of honey, dried fruit, and pralines. The resulting beer is an incredibly unique expression of malt and wood that highlights how time can transform the familiar into something novel and extraordinary.”
