Upslope’s International Lager Series

600 925 Upslope Brewing

We’re very excited to bring the International Lager Series to a larger audience and show off some of the beers we are most proud of and love to drink! Several of these styles have been fan favorites in our tap rooms and will be packaged in a can for the first time. The International Lager Series highlights the great diversity that can be found in lagers and is the culmination of brewing traditions that have influenced us as craft brewers.”

Mexican Style Dark Lager

A tribute to the German-inspired lagers that are brewed in Mexico and hold a special place on life’s proverbial beach. Premium Vienna malt is accented by flaked maize, Tettnanger, and Contessa hops to create a malty, yet crisp and refreshing lager for all summer occasions.

  • ABV: 5.0%
  • IBU: 18
  • COLOR: Deep Amber
  • AROMA: Toasted Bread, Caramel
  • BODY: Medium-Light
  • FOOD: Elote, Lamb Barbacoa, Coconut Flan
  • AVAILABILITY: February-March

Mexican Style Dark Lager is the descendant of Vienna lager that was brought to Mexico by German and Austrian immigrants. Graham cracker and light caramel malt flavors are balanced by herbaceous hop character. Flaked maize helps to lighten the body and makes for a very refreshing beer, which may surprise some who are deceived by its dark color. This deliciously malty lager is superb on its own and goes great with a squeeze of lime or as the base of a michelada.

German Style Pilsner

This German Style Pilsner is clean and crisp with an impeccably balanced hop profile. Pouring a brilliant straw color, it offers fresh and floral aromas from choice Loral and Tettnanger hops. The finish is dry and succinct with refreshing crispness and snappy carbonation.

  • ABV: 4.9%
  • IBU: 35
  • COLOR: Bright Straw
  • AROMA: Fresh Grass, Floral, Delicate Citrus, Bready Malt
  • BODY: Light with Effervescent Carbonation
  • FOOD: Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Sashimi, Arugula Salad
  • AVAILABILITY: April-May

German Pilsner, also known as “pils” in Germany, is a light-bodied and well-attenuated lager with a snappy, floral hop character. This style is a German adaptation of the original pilsner from Bohemia (although some German brewers might argue that the style is of German origin), with a cleaner, drier profile than its predecessor. German pilsner is the ancestor of the lagers that eventually became the most popular style in the world and could be considered the archetypal pale lager.

Japanese Style Lager

A delicate, effervescent lager with snappy hop character and a bone dry finish that makes it the perfect complement to a wide variety of food.

  • ABV: 4.9%
  • IBU: 13
  • COLOR: Pale straw, brilliantly clear
  • AROMA: Green Tea, Korean Pear, Toasted Rice
  • BODY: Very light
  • FOOD: Kumamoto oysters, tonkatsu, green tea mochi
  • AVAILABILITY: June-July

This beer is inspired by the dry rice lagers produced in Japan, namely Asahi Super Dry. Flaked rice adds a pleasant toasty note and lightens the body to yield an extremely crisp and refreshing lager. Contessa hops are a relatively new varietal that have many of the Noble hop characteristics, but with some really unique green tea and pear notes to spice things up. During the dog days of summer nothing can beat the clean, effervescent character of a Japanese Style Lager.

Oktoberfest Festbier Lager

Brewed in the style of the modern Oktoberfest beer, this malt-forward lager features Leopold Bros. Floor-Malted Pilsner malt and Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops for an authentic taste of autumnal refreshment. A sweet, fresh-baked bread nose is followed by light herbaceous hop character and a smooth finish.

  • ABV: 5.5%
  • IBU: 22
  • COLOR: Pale Gold
  • AROMA: Sweet, Bready
  • BODY: Medium
  • FOOD: Soft Pretzel, Jägerschnitzel, Bread Pudding
  • AVAILABILITY: August-September

Oktoberfest is a festbier style lager, which is a modern adaptation of the amber-hued Märzenbier that was traditionally served at the Oktoberfest in Munich. Lighter in color and body, the festbier is better to drink en masse than Märzen, and displays a wonderful balance of full malt flavor and hop bitterness. We’ve chosen to brew with Leopold Bros. floor-malted pilsner malt for its unique, crackery flavor and traditional production methods and Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops for their range of herbal and floral aromas. Oktoberfest is a beer worthy of celebration and a beer we look forward to brewing each year.

Italian Style Pilsner

Our Italian Style Pilsner emphasizes Noble hop character with robust additions of several German varieties to make a refreshing pilsner that will satisfy even the most discerning hop lover.

  • ABV: 5.0%
  • IBU: 27
  • COLOR: Pale Gold
  • AROMA: Floral, Crackery, Herbaceous
  • BODY: Light
  • FOOD: Tuna Crudo, Napoletana Pizza, Lemon Marscapone Cake
  • AVAILABILITY: October-November

The Italian pilsner is a relatively new style that was pioneered by Birrificio Italiano in the mid 1990s. It’s a very hop-forward pilsner, even more so than German Pilsner, but still utilizes Noble-type hop varieties rather than some of the more expressive American hops that are used extensively in IPAs. Italian pilsners are able to finesse this assertive, citrusy hop character in a light, crisp beer and pair wonderfully with many types of food.

Czech Style Dark Lager

A traditional dark lager with a delightful interplay of stone fruit and roasted malt flavors. Pleasantly full in body, but light enough to drink more than one.

  • ABV: 5.0%
  • IBU: 23
  • COLOR: Deep Brown
  • AROMA: Dark Chocolate, Stone Fruit, Freshly Roasted Coffee
  • BODY: Medium-Full
  • FOOD: Goulash, Roast Pork, Black Forest Cake
  • AVAILABILITY: December-January

Founded in 1499 in Prague, U Fleků brewery solely produces tmavé pivo (pronounced tmahvay peevoh), the definitive Czech Dark Lager. This beer style is somewhere between a schwarzbier and a Munich Dunkel, with notes of baked bread, stone fruit, and light roast coffee. The malt profile of the beer is defined by the rich melanoidins extracted from Bohemian floor malt, and a smooth roastiness from special roasted malt. Czech Saaz hops are imperative, and add the light spiciness that balances the malt character of the beer. A clean fermentation makes Czech Dark Lagers both full of flavor and easy to drink more than one. We can’t think of a better lager to sip on a cold winter night by the fire. Na zdraví!
